Bloch, Marc
(1886-1944)
   French historian. Born in Lyons, he studied at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. He then studied in Germany and returned to France to work in Paris. He influenced a gener-ation of French historical scholarship through his teaching and the journal Annales d'Historie Economique et Sociale. He was a professor at Strasbourg University and at the Sorbonne. After the defeat of France, he taught in Vichy France for three years and then joined the French resistance. In 1944 he was arrested by the Nazis and executed.
